Let’s face it, it’s not practical to bring measuring cups everywhere in order to ensure you are eating the correct portion size.  Here are some practical guidelines to follow when you don’t have a measuring device handy.
 
1 oz. of meat
=
the size of a matchbox
3 oz. of meat
=
the size of a deck of cards or bar of soap
3 oz. of fish
=
size of a checkbook
1 oz. of cheese
=
size of 4 dice
Medium potato
=
size of a computer mouse
1 cup pasta
=
size of a tennis ball
Medium apple
=
size of a tennis ball
 
It is also encouraged that you know the nutritional information of foods prior to eating out as sometimes foods can sound healthy and be loaded with extra calories.  Here is a website that may be beneficial in knowing what you are about to eat.
